A Sagada Holy Week

After the Judy Ann Santos-Piolo Pascual flick shot two years ago in picture-perfect Sagada, the so-called ‘’last shangri-la’’ has become an even more popular destination during summer.

Fresh pine-scented air to breathe, a taste of the Kankanay-en culture, and a bit of adventure — what else can anyone ask for? For people seeking refuge from polluted Manila, Sagada is just perfect as the next destination.

In the 70’s, Sagada was a favorite destination of hippies and artists. Potter Jaime de Guzman, who settled for a while in Sagada with his family, fashioned his works using indigenous clay that can only be found in the area.

Photographer Pancho Escaler was the cinematographer for the ‘70s movie "Kung Mangarap Ka’t Magising" starring Christopher de Leon and Hilda Koronel when he fell in love with the town’s simplicity. "A perfect location for landscape photography," noted Escaler.

Sagada has been written about worldwide, documented in film and video by the National Geographic, made a topic for research by anthropologists. Adventure seekers have fun exploring Sagada’s Sumaging and Lumiang Caves; or trekking to Mt. Ampacao to witness the magnificent sunset, or experience a bit of the Kankanayen culture by walking on the rice terraces and visiting Fedilisan Village known for its organic mountain coffee.
