EUGENIO M. Lopez, Jr., was a business leader who held steadfastly to
a different indication of business success, that of public service.
Born into a prestigious family, he entered the field of media after graduation,
serving as Publisher of the Manila Chronicle in 1954. In 1956, he branched out
into radio and the following year he entered television. As the first trimedia
mogul, Lopez did not lose track of his family's conviction that their work in
information is not meant to simply further their interests but to serve the
public. When martial law was declared, he was among those arrested.
After the EDSA Revolution of 1986, Lopez led his family in rebuilding and
starting new enterprises, notably energy and water distribution and
infrastructures. Pursuing his dream of bridging the nation through television, he
employed the first satellite system that allowed ABS-CBN to broadcast
simultaneously in every major island of the country.
Eugenio M. Lopez, Jr. passed on to rejoin his Creator on June 28, 1999,
leaving a legacy of service to the Filipino nation. We join his family and friends
in bidding farewell and pray for the eternal repose of his soul.
