VERDE ISLAND
The two most popular dives here are the Drop off (0-300 feet) and the Spanish Galleon. This one had just left
Manila and plowed into a shallow reef just off the Island. The passengers showed their disgust with the navigator by
hanging him as soon as they set foot on Verde Island. The Drop Off features excellent viz, superlative fish life, big
Gorgonian and lots of Soft Corals. The current is frequently severe, so care must be taken when planning the dive.
The Galleon lies off the shore in 10 feet of water, the keel being the most obvious clue to its presence. Plates, cups
and cannonballs have been recovered by the local divers and on display, courtesy of the National Museum, at local
dive shops. Plenty of goodies are still lying around and every dive yields more artefacts.
MARICABAN
From 15 to 125 feet and featuring moderate currents, this is a dive for experienced divers only. It is a wall with
excellent corals, abundant pelargic fish and outstanding photographic opportunities. There is a cave at 125 feet
which is accessed by a tunnel and makes for a challenging adventure.
CHICKEN FEATHER ISLAND
50 to 70 feet with a flat bottom and moderate currents. The major attraction is the hot spring at 60 to 70 feet.
Around this area one finds excellent coral formation and a preponderance of Egg Cowries.
At the east end of the island is a pinnacle of rock sticking up out the murky depths, homes to lots of Corals, Tuna,
Barracuda, White Tip Shark and tropical fish. Beware of the current, which is severe, in fact often a genuine rip.
The diving around Puerto Galera is indeed well worth travelling for. In order to avoid dissapointment, may we
respectfully suggest that you avail yourself of the service of the local, highly skilled and knowledgeable Dive Masters
and Instructors. There are so many sites to visit here that it makes a lot of sense to allow the experts to plan your
schedule in order that you may gain the maximum enjoyment and safety from your stay.
Happy diving!
