SYDNEY (DPA) -- The Olympic Arts Festival kicked off
recently with the Tubowgule (Meeting of the Waters)
aborigine event.
The festivities started at La Perouse in the southern part
of Sydney where the first recorded meeting between
Europeans and aborigines took place more than 200 years
ago.
Tubowgule continued in the Botanical Gardens with a
dance ceremony and was to conclude later in the day at
the Sydney Opera House with the Bangarra Dance
Theatre.
Friday’s events also featured the first lighting of the white
sails of the Opera House with images inspired by nature
and the four elements - earth, air, fire and water. The
lighting of the sails will continue through the September
15-October 1 Olympics.
The Arts festival runs until September 30. It will feature a
wide range of local and international talent in visual and
performing arts, film, literature and music. Performers
include German Ute Lemper, England’s DV8 Physical
Theatre and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
