This fiesta month of May, it’s Albay’s turn to celebrate the Magayon, the province’s biggest annual festival which is fast rising to the list of the country’s much-awaited festivals such as Ati-Atihan, Sinulog, Dinagyang, Panagbenga and Masskara.

Tourists visiting Albay, one of Bicol’s most prosperous provinces should grab this opportunity to see and experience the best of what the place can offer. The month-long revelry showcases all the best features of Albay — from its historical attractions, natural wonders, rich cultural heritage, spicy and coconut-based cuisine, thriving industries to its warm and friendly people.

A brainchild of Albay Governor Al Francis C. Bichara, the Magayon Festival is a tribute to Albay’s mythical maiden, “Daragang Magayon.” The word Magayon means beautiful in the local dialect.

Over 40 events classified into culture and arts; travel and tourism; sports; games and recreation; and special events, have been organized for locals as well visitors by the Provincial Tourism and Cultural Affairs Office led by Gov. Bichara.

Topping the festival’s list of must-see activities is the Sili-Eating Contest on May 26 at the Penaranda Park. The winner of this fiery contest will attempt to equal, if not break the Guinness World Record of 300 scorching sili in one sitting by reigning sili king Roberto Gonzales of Camalig, Albay.

Another hot competition that is set to draw large crowds is the Efren Bata vs. Batang Albay billiard match on May 30.

The brave and adventurous souls can also participate in the province’s version of the hit series Survivor- the Survival Challenge. This competition is an eco-challenge that will definitely test one’s survival skills, agility and endurance.

Of course, no festival is complete without the search for the prettiest lady of Albay in the Bb. Magayon 2002 on May 24.

Local designers will also mount a fashion show on May 29 with designs and styles from the 60s up to the present to be modelled by local government officials. Also, sexy hunks and babes will have their turn at the catwalk of Bacacay Beach, that is, during the Bikini Challenge on May 15.

Tourists should also take advantage of the Lakbay Albay sightseeing tour to the province’s scenic sites and destinations that include the majestic Mt. Mayon Volcano, Cagsawa Ruins, its pristine beaches and enchanting falls.

Aside from these activities, trade fairs, exhibits and job fairs have also been set up for budding entrepreneurs, businessmen and job seekers and employers.

The Magayon festival gives both Albayanos and visitors the chance to savor the richness of Albay’s heritage and culture. It also aims to foster and nurture among Albayanos a sense of pride for their culture which is being endangered because of a deterioration of patriotic and nationalist fervor.

Since its inception two years ago, the festival has also helped create an active economy for Albay as various industries like transport, restaurants, resorts, hotels and small business enterprises were able to generate more revenues
