The Korean Ministry of Culture and Tourism awarded Tourism Secretary Richard J. Gordon for his outstanding contributions in tourism development in East Asia.

Gordon was in Korea for a six-day sales mission and roadshow where he led the Philippine contingent composed of travel trade and local government representatives in the promotion of “Visit Philippines Year 2003” in Seoul, Daegu and Busan.

Gordon, the only awardee not residing in Korea, received the award with seven other prominent personalities who have contributed in boosting tourism in the East Asian region.

In his acceptance speech, Gordon heeded for the strong support of the other Asia-Pacific region’s co-members, specially on issues concerning the effect of bombing incidents to the tourism industry. He said “Vigilance is the key to fighting terrorism. We should all get our acts together to maintain security and safety of tourists in our areas.”

Gordon is concurrent World Tourism Organization commissioner for East Asia and the Pacific as well as the incoming Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) chairman for 2003-2004.

The plaques were awarded by Minister Kim Seong-jae of the Korean Culture and Tourism Ministry on the occasion of the 29th World Tourism Organization Day. Witnessing the event were Dho Young Shim, chairperson of the Visit Korea Year 2001 and US Ambassador to Korea Thomas Hubbard.
