The passage of time show how changes and most often eliminates several elements of a people’s culture. Not the province of Bulacan. Despite its answer to the call of modernization, Bulacan was still able to preserve its rich cultural heritage, its forefathers’ legacy.

The nearest province situated north of Manila, Bulacan is rich in history, the land of heroes and poets, one of the few places where ‘pure Tagalog’ is still spoken. It produced the two Del Pilars, Marcelo, the great Propagandist and Gregorio, the hero of Tirad Pass; and Francisco Baltazar (Balagtas), the prince of Filipino poets among others.

On Sept. 8 to 15, the province of Bulacan hosts Bulacan Week 2003, a celebration of arts, culture, history and tradition, to coincide with the 105th anniversary of the Malolos Congress.

With theme, “Pamana ng Kalinangan at Kasaysayan, Pamukaw Sigla sa Maunlad na Kabuhayan,” the festival showcases Bulacan’s rich culture and the diverse talents of the Bulakenyos. The celebration kicks off with the opening ceremonies to be held simultaneously in Bulacan’s 22 towns and two cities.

“We have lined up several activities as part of this week-long celebration. Highlight will be the ‘Tatak Bulakenyo’ product-launching and trade fair which will feature Bulacan’s most popular food products. The works of famous visual artists Joya and Malang will be on exhibit at the Barasoain Church. There will also be a photo exhibit, a diorama, a bonsai exhibit, job fairs, forums, quiz shows, fetes for farmers and barangay tanods, competitions and concerts,” said Bulacan governor Josie M. dela Cruz.

During this week, Bulacan will honor the life and works of National Artist for Music Antonino Buenaventura, one of the Bulacan’s prominent sons, in an exhibit entitled “Isang Pagtatanghal sa Buhay at Sining ni Maestro Toning,” to be held at the Sentro ng Sining at Kultura (SSKB) Building in Malolos City.

Furthermore, Bulacan will award the Gawad Dangal ng Lipi to its sons and daughters who have made their mark in various fields.

Present-day Bulacan is trying to evolve from being an agricultural area to an industrialized one. It boasts of its excellently-crafted jewelry, garments, gifts, toys, and leathercraft, and diverse pyrotechnics products. The majority in the rural areas, however, are still dependent on agriculture with rice as the principal crop.

Situated within the Industrial Hub of the W Growth Corridor, Bulacan takes pride in being the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Center of the region. The province plays host to a number of privately-owned industrial parks equipped with key structures and amenities, making Bulacan a viable destination for investors engaged in manufacturing, trading and services.

FAMOUS TOURIST SPOTS

Aside from being an industrial destination, Bulacan is also known for its diverse tourist attractions. Historical landmarks and various recreational spots abound in the area.

The scenic Biak-na-Bato in San Miguel is known for its caves, natural pools and historical importance. There are also the Francisco Balagtas Monument in Balagtas and the old Spanish colonial houses in Bustos.

In Malolos, the province’s capital, lies the famous Barasoain Church which was the site of Revolutionary Congress which drafted the first Philippine Constitution. The Casa Real Ruins, site of the printing press that produced the 1898 Constitution and the Malolos Presidential Place, the official residence of Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo during the first Philippine Republic, can be found in Malolos.

The Hiyas ng Bulacan, also in Malolos, is a cultural center and museum where the memorabilia of the great men of the province are kept. Adjoining the center is a Galeria which displays the province’s products.

Baras Bakal in Angat, a stone cave, is another favorite picnic place, especially in summer. The Hilltop Lake in Norzagaray on the Sierra Madre is known as the “Baguio of Bulacan.” Other natural attractions are the beaches in Hagonoy and Obando, the waterfalls in Norzagaray, San Ildefonso and San Miguel, and the springs in San Miguel and Pandi which are famous for their medicinal water.
