The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) recently opened the Subic Bay Historical Center, in an effort to chronicle the rich culture and history of Subic, Olongapo in Zambales.

The light and sound museum, located at the Subic Bay Arts Center (SUBAC), highlights Subic’s early beginnings from the days that it was an Aeta colony to its development as a naval port by the Spaniards, the Japanese, and Americans.

Architect Macario De leon, who heads the SBMA’s Planning Development Office said the center was built to report the events that transpired during the different periods of development of Subic Bay.

"This is one big storybook complete with interactive displays and life-sized dioramas that will tell the story of Subic, from its past to present," he said.

SBMA Chairman Felicito Payumo, who led the opening rites, cited the significance of the museum to the people of Subic.

"The museum is very special to us. We now have a place to go to learn more about Subic’s significance to the country and the rich heritage it has," he said.

He stressed that the new center will not only be a repository of artifacts about the place but will likewise offer materials, literature, and multi-media resources which can be used by those who need to do research work about Subic.

"The new center will not only be a museum of sorts but also a research center where you can get materials about Subic and its relation to national development," he added.

Payumo explained that the historical center is part of SBMA’s continuing campaign of edutainment (education and entertainment) through tourism, and targets school kids, local and foreign tourists.

The SBMA is also accepting contributions such as historical photos, memorabilia or the like to be displayed at the museum with credits to the donors.
