Avoid  Sun - Induced Skin  Damage

You can still enjoy the great outdoors and continue to reap all of the positive health benefits gaines from spending time in the fresh air and sunshine. Just take the following precautions to protect yourself and your children while having fun in the sun:

1. Keep infants out of the sun-especially babies under 6 months of age.

2. Avoid being in the sun between 10 AM and 2PM.

3. Remember to choose a sunscreen such as Coppertone with an SPF appropriate to your skin type and outdoor activity. The higher the SPF level, the more protection your will receive.

4. Select a sunscreen that will protect you rom both the UV-A and UV-B rays. And while fair-skinned people are at the greatest risk, people with medium and dark complexion should also take precautions since skin color does not make you immune to UV absorption.

5.Protect yourself and your children from the sun-for infants and toddlers, use a canopy stroller or an umbrealla. A har with a wide brim can help shield young children from harmful rays. Light colored clothing also helps reflect the sun.

6. Beware of reflected light and cloudy days. As much as 80% of the sun's radiation makes it through clouds; thus, you can get burned on cloudy days.

7. Do not mix the sun with certain medications such as tetracycline as it may cause an adverse reaction when you are in the sun, so consult your physician.

8. Wear safe sunglasses-sunglasses can protect eyes from absorbing ultraviolet rays, so make sure the lenses absorb 100% of both UV-A and UV-B light. It is actually worse to wear sunglasses without UV rating than no sunglasses at all since your pupils will dilate behind the dark lenses and actually allow more UV in.

9. Examine skin regularly-keep an eye out for unusual growth, itchy patches, sores that won't heal, hanges in moles or colored areas.

10. Set a good example for your child-the same rules about protection apply to adults, too.

11. Make sure to put an even layer on all exposed areas at least 30 minutes before exposure to the sun. This lets the skin absorb the lotion for a longer lasting protection.

12. For the average person in bathing suit, nine (9) portions (each portion approximately 1.5 tsp) is the amount of sunscreen needed to be applied to the skin. It is distributed as follows:

Face and neck: 1.5 tsp.
Arm and shoulder: 1.5 tsp to each side.
Torso: 1.5 tsp each to front and back.
Leg and top of foot: 1 tsp to each side.

13.Pay special attention to skin areas more sun-sensitive than others and more susceptible to burning-nose, lips, ears, cheekbone areas, shoulders.

14. If swimming or exercising, sunscreens should be applied liberally and reapplied often.

15. Remember sun protection should be practiced year-round.

The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) Rating

Sunscreen products come in a wide variety of forms: Lotions, oils, gels, mousses and even aerosols, but most have a "Sun Protection Factor" rating, known as the "SPF". The sun protection factor (SPF) is a ratio between the ultraviolet dose required to produce minimal erythema reaction (redness) in protected skin (skin with sunscreen). SPF numbers range from 4 to 45. The SPF number indicates how many times longer a person can stay in the sun before beginning to burn while wearing sun protection than if he/she is not wearing any sunscreen at all. This amount of time varies from one individual to another. For example, Coppertone SPF 15 lotion allows a person to remain in the sun without burning 15 times longer than if that same person did not use the product. By using the right SPF when you are in the sun, redness and related conditoon like itching and peeling will be minimized. Never use lotions or oils that do not provide sun protection.
